We are nearly half-way through a new decade that calls for us to celebrate our uniqueness rather than conforming to the norm for acceptance. The era of just showing up to deliver mediocre performance within conventional limits is behind us. Organizations seek individuals who can shine and create a significant impact. You cannot effect change by merely repeating what has already been done; you must embrace your unique characteristics.
Years ago, when I first embarked on my journey in the speaking realm, I found myself closely observing renowned figures like Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn, and Les Brown—all the influential motivational speakers of that time. It struck me one day that when I took the stage, I was simply imitating what I had absorbed and witnessed.
I realized I was not a distinct voice. There was nothing that set me apart; I was merely blending in. My audiences were only experiencing a fraction of who I truly was; they saw a version of me that longed to conform rather than to stand out.
My perspective shifted dramatically when my mentor shared with me, “You weren’t meant to blend in; you were designed to shine.”
Your uniqueness is your strength
That insight became the catalyst for unlocking the depths of my soul, leading me to understand: A job is merely what you’re compensated to do, but discovering your passion is your true calling.
Once I accepted that, something transformed within me. I suddenly declared, “I refuse to blend in any longer. I no longer desire to conform. I want to challenge the status quo and forge my own path, going against the grain of conventional wisdom.”
Here’s the truth: In this decade, when everyone is zigging, dare to zag. When the crowd insists, “It must be done this way,” have the courage to be unconventional, stand apart, and walk your own unique path.
That’s where your liberation lies.
True freedom doesn’t come from being a “yes” person. It’s about asserting “no” to what doesn’t serve you and affirming “yes” to what longs to surface. That’s the essence of making a change.
As you start the year, establish a clear intention for the months ahead. Reflect on these questions:
- “What proactive steps can I take immediately to define how I intend to be distinctive and true to myself for the entire year?”
- “In what areas of my life have I been echoing others, and how can I begin to express my authentic voice?”
- “What situations might arise where I need to choose to zag instead of following the crowd?”
Document your thoughts, and revisit them at least quarterly. Ask yourself, “Have I been celebrating my unique traits?”
