Donald Trump required a bit of assistance from a Fox News journalist to locate a letter that Joe Biden had left for him in the Oval Office.
Following his inauguration on Monday, Trump began signing a variety of executive actions in the West Wing while surrounded by reporters. As he affixed his signature at the Resolute Desk, Fox’s Peter Doocy inquired: “President Trump, did President Biden leave you a letter?”
Trump lifted his eyebrows and replied “he might have!” before questioning “don’t they usually place it in the desk? I have no idea.” The MAGA leader then opened a drawer in the desk and discovered an envelope marked with “47.”
“Oh, thanks Peter, this could have taken us years to uncover!” Trump exclaimed, pulling the letter out of the drawer. “Perhaps we should all take a look at it together!” he joked, before suggesting that maybe he should review it first before disclosing its contents.
Doocy mentioned he was “glad to assist” after Trump expressed his gratitude once more, noting that he might not have noticed the note for “months.” The new president mentioned that he had also left a letter for Biden at the conclusion of his first term.
When asked what he had written about, Trump replied: “The unification of our nation.” Biden has previously stated that Trump’s letter was “very generous,” although the details of its contents remain private.
Trump promptly continued his comments on unification by taking a jab at the timing of Biden’s pardons for his relatives earlier that day.
“You know, I wasn’t aware that he granted a pardon to his family, because it happened during my speech,” he remarked. “He didn’t inform me; they announced it during my speech. I mean, during my speech, all I could say was ‘excuse me, I’d like to return and say a few more words.’ So no, we were taken by surprise—it’s obviously a bad precedent.”
