The president-elect, Donald Trump, is said to be contemplating Florida Representative Jared Moskowitz as the leading candidate to head the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during his imminent administration.
According to two informed sources, CNN states that Moskowitz, who is a Democrat, is highly regarded for this position. Additionally, an individual affiliated with Trump’s transition team has verified that Moskowitz is being considered.
Although it remains uncertain whether Moskowitz and Trump have already had discussions regarding this role, should he be chosen, Moskowitz would become the most senior Democrat in Trump’s forthcoming administration.
While the revelation of Moskowitz’s candidacy may catch some off guard, the Florida representative has previously collaborated with House Republicans and has two years of experience under Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as the head of Emergency Management. Moskowitz played a pivotal role in Florida’s recovery efforts following Hurricane Michael in 2018 and spearheaded the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Additionally, Moskowitz has expressed support for one of Trump’s staunchest supporters, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. He was also the first Democrat to declare his intent to join the congressional caucus for Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) when it launches next January.
According to CNN, Moskowitz proposed legislation to elevate FEMA to a Cabinet-level agency that would report directly to the president last year. He has also held positions in the private sector as general counsel and vice president of business development for AshBritt Environmental, a company involved in disaster recovery initiatives.
