President Donald Trump has granted a significant promotion to the leader of his personal security team, who had previously protected him during an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania last year.
Sean Curran has been designated as the director of the Secret Service, as announced by Trump on Truth Social.
“Sean is a remarkable Patriot, who has safeguarded my family these past few years, which is why I have faith in him to guide the Brave Men and Women of the United States Secret Service,” the president stated.
Curran played a crucial role in swiftly escorting Trump off the stage during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July, when a gunman executed what became the first of two unsuccessful assassination attempts against the then-Republican presidential candidate.
Trump sustained a minor injury to his right ear but narrowly avoided serious harm by mere millimeters when he moved his head.
Curran “demonstrated his remarkable bravery when he risked his own safety to protect mine from an assassin’s bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump remarked. “I have complete confidence in Sean to strengthen the United States Secret Service like never before.”
Shortly after the assassination attempt in July, Kimberly Cheatle resigned from her position as director of the Secret Service. Ronald Rowe Jr. took over, expressing that he felt “ashamed” of the agency’s shortcomings during the incident.
Trump noted that Curran boasts over 20 years of law enforcement experience, having started his journey in the Secret Service in 2001 as a special agent in the Newark Field Office. He also served in the agency’s Presidential Protective Division throughout the first Trump administration.
“Sean has set himself apart as an exceptional leader, fully capable of directing and overseeing operational security plans for some of the most intricate Special Security Events in our Country’s and the World’s History,” Trump stated.
In his role as Trump’s chief of security, Curran supervises approximately 85 personnel. However, multiple sources have indicated to CNN their concern regarding Curran’s ability to manage an agency as extensive as the Secret Service.
