Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta and the head of Canada’s most conservative province, described her recent discussions with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate as “friendly and constructive.”
She was among a number of notable Canadian conservatives who visited Trump’s Florida resort over the weekend.
Since assuming office in 2022, Smith—a well-known advocate of Covid conspiracies who has also shown interest in chemtrails—has frequently clashed with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, particularly regarding environmental policies that she claims jeopardize the economy of her oil-rich province.
Her government even enacted a provincial law allowing the province to disregard federal regulations it considers unconstitutional—legislation that was criticized by her conservative predecessor as a “full-frontal attack on the rule of law.”
Nevertheless, she is not receptive to Trump’s remarks suggesting that Canada should become the 51st state. In a message reflecting on her visit to Mar-a-Lago, she highlighted Canada’s “independence” and the energy exports it provides to the U.S. as significant discussion points.
“The United States and Canada are both proud and independent nations with one of the most important security alliances on earth and the largest economic partnership in history,” Smith stated. “We must maintain our independence while fostering this vital partnership for the benefit of both Canadians and Americans for generations to come.”
Over the weekend, Smith was spotted alongside at least two other leading conservative Canadians in the Sunshine State.
The other attendees included Jordan Peterson, a psychologist turned self-help author, and Shark Tank host Kevin O’Leary, both of whom are outspoken supporters of the former president.
An Instagram post by Paul L. Palandjian, CEO of O’Leary’s venture capital company, featured the trio together at the Palm Beach resort accompanied by the caption “Trudeau fan club.”
