Senator Chuck Schumer expressed his thoughts on Donald Trump’s contentious proposal to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” as the president-elect intensifies his expansionist dialogue leading up to the inauguration.
The Democrat from New York stated that he would support Trump’s initiative to give the waterway a “more patriotic” title, but only if the president-elect “first consents to collaborate with us on a concrete strategy to reduce expenses for Americans.”
“The American populace desires our attention on those matters first, rather than the renaming of geographical features,” Schumer remarked during a speech on the Senate floor on Wednesday, further asserting that the priorities of Democrats “are much more in tune with the worries of the American public compared to those of Donald Trump.”
The president-elect proposed the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico during a press conference on Tuesday while outlining various geopolitical strategies, which included annexing Canada, acquiring Greenland, and reclaiming the Panama Canal.
His remarks have since sparked both endorsement from his supporters and significant controversy.
Schumer, however, criticized Trump for attempting to “divert America’s attention with outlandish ideas,” contending that changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico “will not assist individuals in saving money at the grocery store.”
His views were mirrored by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who asserted that “House Democrats believe our mission in Washington is not to invade Greenland, rename the Gulf of Mexico, or forcibly seize the Panama Canal.”
According to Jeffries, Congress should “concentrate on the crucial issues affecting the American populace: Housing expenses are excessively high, grocery prices are too inflated, insurance costs are soaring, and utility bills are exorbitant.”
