Ohio Representative Warren Davidson encountered sinificant criticism after advocating for the suspension of federal disaster assistance to California until the state enhances its forestry management practices.
“There’s no question we need to tackle the issue of wildfires, but California’s forestry management is fundamentally flawed,” the MAGA congressman stated during an interview with Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo on Friday. “What they are currently doing only facilitates the growth and spread of massive wildfires.”
“If they are seeking financial aid, there should be repercussions that necessitate a change in their policies,” he added. “We are in favor of supporting those affected by disasters, but we also need to compel the California government to amend its approach.”
Since the wildfires ignited in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday, over 180,000 residents in Los Angeles County have been forced to evacuate, and at least 11 fatalities have been reported.
Davidson’s remarks about withholding support from California drew swift backlash on social media, with numerous users on X responding to his post that elaborated on his viewpoint.
“I swear to God that next time there’s a disaster in Ohio, I’ll fight hard to ensure none of our politicians approve a cent for you. Anti-American piece of s**t,” one individual expressed on the platform.
Another user remarked, “Republicans are truly trying to avoid acknowledging the enormous issue at hand—climate change.”
“Can you imagine if Democrats even subtly suggested something like this concerning Florida or Texas?,” another noted.
The wildfires have turned into a political issue, with President-elect Donald Trump largely faulting California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom for the “monumental incompetence and poor management” of wildfire prevention strategies.
“One of the most remarkable and stunning areas of the United States of America is turning to ashes,” Trump posted on Truth Social earlier in the week. “It is reduced to cinders, and Gavin Newscum should step down. This is all on him!!!”
In another statement, he remarked, “Let this exemplify the absolute incompetence and mismanagement by the Biden/Newscum Alliance. January 20th can’t come soon enough!”
