Former Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who was the self-destructing nominee for attorney general under President-elect Donald Trump, appears to have landed a secondary position after stepping away from the race for the country’s principal law enforcement role.
Alongside his upcoming role as a host on the right-wing channel One America News starting in January, Gaetz is reportedly in discussions to become affiliated with the law firm of prominent Democratic supporter John Morgan, as both individuals shared with Politico.
Morgan, who holds an unaffiliated status in Florida, has a history of backing significant Democratic figures; he served as former President Bill Clinton’s finance chair in the state and has contributed to former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
He informed Politico that his firm, Morgan & Morgan, recognized for its personal injury and class action lawsuits, recruits “finders, minders and grinders” and suggested that Gaetz could fulfill the role of a “finder-minder.”
Gaetz relayed to the outlet that they have “discussed potential professional collaboration.”
Morgan has been a significant backer of Florida ballot measures that legalized medical marijuana and raised the state’s minimum wage. In 2019, he also participated in a bipartisan initiative alongside Gaetz and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, urging state representatives to lift the ban on smokable medical marijuana.
Morgan’s firm was in litigation against the state concerning this matter, and the marijuana-friendly Gaetz facilitated an agreement between the Democratic megadonor and the most prominent Republican in the state.
Beyond his pro-marijuana stance, Morgan praised Gaetz for his readiness to challenge the property insurance sector and processed foods, stating to Politico: “Many of the political views I hold align with those of Matt Gaetz.”
The specifics of Gaetz’s potential secondary role since departing from his House seat last month are contingent on the particulars of his new television position.
He exited the political arena after withdrawing from consideration for Trump’s attorney general nomination, a move that initiated a Senate inquiry following numerous ethical claims.
Gaetz had resigned from the House just prior to the Ethics Committee’s scheduled meeting regarding an investigation into accusations that he engaged in sexual relations with a 17-year-old and used illegal substances.
He has refuted these claims, and an investigation by the Department of Justice did not result in any charges.
