Although it may seem otherwise and many may think there is room for everyone, the technology sector is quite closed and only a few companies are the ones who take the lion’s share. The Digital Services Law imposed by the EU wants to put an end to the dominance of Big Tech (Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft), but they are not willing to make room for others.
Just look at how with each new technology that emerges, these large technology companies rush to ensure that they are the ones in control. The most recent example was with Artificial Intelligence, which after positioning itself as the technology of the present and future, all these Big Tech companies have already presented their own projects.
We saw how Microsoft led this race thanks to its investment in ChatGPT, and how Google quickly caught up with Gemini, at the same time that, for example, Apple is now trying to cover all the gaps by accelerating the creation of its own AI.
But while AI will be the main technology of our times, that does not mean that there are other areas that still have a lot of potential, such as Mixed Reality (MR), which combines Virtual and Augmented Reality. And while our minds now associate it with Apple Vision Pro, the company that has been working on this technology for years and has invested billions of euros is Meta.
Meta presented its Meta Quest glasses several years ago, and the truth is that they were not as successful as the public expected, but that does not mean they have not created an entire ecosystem around this technology that culminated in the development of the Horizon OS operating system.
And now, the company has just announced that as a measure to offer more options to consumers and provide a broader ecosystem they have decided to release this operating system to ASUS, Microsoft, and Lenovo, so that they can develop their own MR products based on the Meta system.
In this way, the millions invested by Mark Zuckerberg’s company will allow these companies to launch their own products, benefiting both parties and now Apple will have to run this “MR race” on its own.
This is because in the past the sector had overlooked Meta’s efforts with this technology, but had gone crazy with Apple’s. This strategy that Zuckerberg has decided to take is seen as an attempt to keep his Quest and MR projects afloat.
And the truth is that it could work, since they have already announced collaborations that have generated much more buzz than other launches the company has made on this topic in the past. For example, they have announced a collaboration with Xbox with Microsoft to launch a limited edition of the Meta Quest headset, similarly ASUS plans to create gaming glasses for “high-performance titles,” according to a statement.
