WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging applications worldwide, used by millions of people to communicate daily. And with so many millions of users constantly using the app, it is normal for it to occasionally experience outages and errors that prevent it from functioning correctly.

However, there are times when WhatsApp does not work as it should, but the fault is not Meta’s, but rather ourselves or our device that is failing for some reason. One common problem faced by users is the lack of message notifications.

Causes why you are not receiving notifications on WhatsApp and their solution

As we were saying, it is important to understand that there are several possible reasons for this to happen, and each one requires a specific solution.

Configure WhatsApp notifications

The first thing you should check is the notification settings within the application itself. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings, and click on Notifications. Here, make sure that notifications are enabled for individual messages, groups, and calls.

Activate notifications on your device

In addition to WhatsApp settings, device notifications must be properly configured. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Notifications and make sure that notifications are enabled. On iOS, go to Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp and check that Allow notifications is activated.

You have Do Not Disturb or silent mode activated

Another common reason is that your device is in Do Not Disturb mode or silent. On many devices, this mode disables all notifications. Make sure it is not activated and, if it is, deactivate it. On Android, you can do this from the status bar or in Settings > Sound. On iOS, go to Settings > Do Not Disturb.

You have connection issues

WhatsApp notifications depend on a stable Internet connection. If you are in an area with weak signal or your Wi-Fi is not working correctly, you may not receive notifications. Make sure you are connected to a stable Wi-Fi network or have a good signal on your mobile data.

You have pending updates

Having an outdated version of WhatsApp or your device’s operating system can cause notification problems. Make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Also, check for pending updates for your device’s operating system and, if there are any, install them.
