Released in 1985, 1989, and 1990, the movies of Back to the Future generated a legion of unconditional fans that still persists today, almost forty years later. This love for the adventures of Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and his young friend Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) led the car manufacturer DeLorean to relaunch its most legendary model, the DMC-12, although adapted to the new times in the form of an electric car.
Now, from a workshop in Bradenton, Florida, comes another madness more linked to this saga: transforming a Tesla Model X into a time machine.
A “silliness” for fun
The work was carried out by The Shop, a mechanical workshop specializing in customizations, tuning, and transformations. In fact, the car belongs to the owner of the workshop himself, Robert Selby. As he himself has stated in an interview, he is a big fan of cinema, pop culture, and cars, so this work is a direct result of all those hobbies. “Let me get an electric vehicle and do something really stupid with it just for fun,” thought the mechanic.
Throughout the past year, the workshop has been posting videos of the transformation process, creating a vehicle that could undoubtedly belong to Doc himself if the movies had been made today.
Taking advantage of the fact that the Model X is one of the very few cars that currently have gullwing doors (just like that DeLorean), the Tesla has undergone a series of modifications to resemble what would be today the time machine. Thus, the paint and wheels have been replaced by others similar to those of the original model, and ducts and air grilles have been added to the external part of the body; as for the interior, it has been redesigned with LED lights and various accessories (such as the flux capacitor) to simulate that past futurism (the original movie envisioned the future in the past 2015).
Although undoubtedly the standout feature of this Tesla-DeLorean are the two flamethrowers it carries behind its rear wheels. These devices perfectly mimic the trail of flames that the DeLorean from the movies left every time it embarked on a time travel journey.
