The world of collectibles knows no boundaries. Recently, the impressive price paid for a special edition of the Superman comic was revealed at a Heritage Auctions auction.
This is a unique piece of the comic that shed light on Superman created in 1938 and is named ‘The Last Son of Krypton.’. This copy was sold for 6 million dollars (5.5 million euros at the exchange rate). This makes it the highest comic transaction in history.
According to AP information, the buyer, who remains anonymous, had already paid a million-dollar amount for another comic of the same superhero.
To understand the value of this copy, Heritage Auctions explained that the piece comes from the Kansas City Pedigree, which has a CGC rating of “Very Fine+” of 8.5 – and there are only two other un-restored copies with higher ratings.
Heritage Auctions considered it to be “the most important comic ever published.”. They also explained that the Superman who first appeared in that 1938 edition “remains extraordinarily similar” to the current version.
A report from the comic grading service ‘Certified Guaranty Company’ estimates that there are currently only 100 copies of the first issue of Action Comics out of the 200,000 printed by DC’s predecessor.
Other high-value comic copies
Although for a lower price, other rare copies of ‘Action Comics’ have also been auctioned for millions of dollars in recent years, including a copy with a six-point rating that sold for 3.56 million dollars.
This year’s record sale surpasses the previous holder of the title of the most expensive comic ever sold, which was a copy of another comic featuring Superman, sold privately for 5.3 million dollars (about 4.8 million euros) in 2022, according to CGC.
