On this day (May 13), Sam Altman is scheduled to make an important announcement about Open AI. Expectations about the statement began on Friday when he said on the social network X (formerly Twitter) that his team has been working hard on new things that people will love, and that it’s something “magical.”
“It’s not GPT-5 or a search engine, but we’ve worked hard on some new things that we think people will love! It feels magical to me. Monday at 10 am Pacific time (announcement time),” Altman stated on his X account.

Several theories are speculated about the announcement, but the most likely is that the artificial intelligence (AI) company could bring an update so that ChatGPT can compete directly with Google Search. This will happen on this day, just a day before the Google I/O 2024 event.
In this line, Altman’s company announced that the updates will revolve around ChatGPT and GPT-4, its latest AI model. It is unknown what will change. Although OpenAI will not launch an online search engine, “it could enhance its chatbot to compete with Google Search,” Wired article states.
A week ago, the domain ‘search.chatgpt.com’ was revealed. The address is currently inactive and only shows the message “not found,” the British outlet explains. “It has Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), a certificate that verifies the identity of an online site and allows establishing an encrypted connection between a server and a web browser,” it adds.
Additionally, OpenAI redesigned its official page and added a search bar at the top of the main window with the message “Ask ChatGPT anything.” The website’s new aesthetic gives glimpses of possible new features and its possible focus on managing informational content. In this context, the company has closed licensing agreements with important groups and media outlets such as Prisa Media, AP, Le Monde, and the Financial Times.
Altman’s move to beat Google
The date chosen by Sam Altman is not coincidental. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the Google I/O 2024 event will take place, where the company will present new AI products and solutions.
“Google dominates the global web search market by owning 83% of the market share,” according to calculations from the Statista database, as reported by Wired. In this line, the efficiency of the service has been questioned in recent years. Various research indicates that the platform has been “prioritizing short-term advertising revenue over search quality. The company acknowledges that its dominance in the market is under threat,” the outlet concludes.
