The security forces and armies always seek new technologies that make their work easier. Often, this technology involves deterrent devices, such as drones or surveillance elements whose presence prevents assaults, attacks, or crimes from being committed.
It was difficult to expect a proposal to emerge that involved a robot dog equipped with a flamethrower. But yes, it’s called Thermonator and despite the controversy, it is already for sale.
This, to say the least peculiar, device combines robotic technology with a flamethrower capable of projecting fire up to nine meters in distance and shooting fire for 45 minutes.
The company behind the Thermonator flamethrower robot dog is Throwflame, an American company specialized in the manufacture of flamethrowers and products related to controlled fire use.
Headquartered in Ohio, Throwflame has stood out for offering portable flamethrowers for various applications, both industrial and recreational. Since its foundation, the company has sought to innovate in the practical application of fire, such as weed control and controlled burning to prevent forest fires.
Now, for many, it has launched this device with the intention of gaining attention.
The flamethrower dog is for sale generating controversy
The quadruped robot incorporates a flamethrower on its back. Although its appearance may seem threatening, its use is mainly aimed at non-military applications. According to Throwflame, the robot can help prevent forest fires, burn weeds, and remove snow or ice in dangerous areas.
Throwflame has been the subject of debate due to the nature of its products, which, although designed for legal uses, can be seen as dangerous if used incorrectly. Through the development of Thermonator, the company seeks to expand its reach by combining robotic technology with flamethrowers, presenting a device that promises to be useful in applications such as land clearing and ecological area maintenance.
However, this combination of advanced technology with fire raises questions about safety and potential misuse, generating interest in how the company and authorities will address these concerns.
Thermonator can be controlled remotely or autonomously, thanks to the sensors and LiDAR navigation system it incorporates. In controlled mode, it is wirelessly operated via a remote control; in autonomous mode, it operates without human intervention.
Its 16-kilogram weight, along with the FPV (First-person view) navigation capability, make it versatile for various applications. However, its potential to cause harm if used irresponsibly raises questions about its ethical and legal use.
Priced at $9,420 (about 8,300 euros), Throwflame has ensured that it will only be available in the United States for now.
