It was a few weeks ago when it was known that Tesla, the electric car company owned by Elon Musk, decided to lay off more than 14,000 employees from its global workforce, which represents 10% of it, as a palliative measure to the worst results in the manufacturer’s history.
And it is that, for the first time since its creation, Tesla has sold fewer electric cars than in the same period of the previous year. Furthermore, the company has been wrapped in great uncertainty regarding the company’s strategy for the future, where it is divided between continuing with the manufacture of a cheap electric car or abandoning those plans and focusing on the robotaxi.
Due to this complicated situation, Tesla had to take measures to reassure shareholders, and unfortunately for its employees, it took the same path that many companies have taken in recent years, massive layoffs.
Now, the letter that the company informed its former employees about their separation paths has been leaked, and both on social networks and in the media, many users have reacted with the coldness with which they have dispensed with personnel, even with those people who have been key to moving the company forward in its most difficult moments with shifts of up to 24 hours as pointed out by The Verge.
“I am contacting you to inform you that, after a careful review of your permanent work restrictions and your role, it has been determined that there is no reasonable adjustment that would allow you to perform the essential functions of your position in your role” begins the letter.
“The next step in the interactive process is the Alternative Job Search (AJS) process, which involves reviewing Tesla’s internal and external job pool to identify potential positions. This is to inform you that we have not identified any vacancies for which you appear qualified.
Given the recent changes in the company, we also do not anticipate vacancies of this kind in the short term. Therefore, we inform you that we intend to conclude the AJS process at this time. As we have not identified an available alternative position, we will begin to process your separation from employment with Tesla, effective May 3, 2024″.
At no time does the letter use the word “dismissal”, but rather alleges that currently and in the future the affected individuals have nothing to contribute, and therefore terminate their services. Many people are pointing out that it seems like the letter was written by a feelingless Artificial Intelligence, although Musk can sometimes be as cold as a machine, and in fact, according to Bloomberg, the billionaire privately expressed his desire to lay off at least 20 percent of the company.
