David Brindley, Deputy Editor of AARP Bulletin, has shared some tips from the 15th edition of “99 Great Ways to Save” to help consumers save money during times of high inflation. One suggestion is to wait until winter for home improvement projects. Contractors are often looking for work during this time, so they may offer discounts and give you their full attention.

Buying used items, such as sports equipment and cellphones, can also lead to significant savings. Fully refurbished cellphones are typically under warranty and can save you hundreds of dollars. When shopping for clothes, it’s best to do so on a full stomach.

Studies have shown that hungry shoppers tend to buy 70% more clothes on impulse.

Smart ways to save

Before heading to the stores, check the apps of major retailers.

One in three offer discounts and special benefits through their apps. Neighbors can save money by hiring the same gardener, as collective hiring could lead to discounts. Moving your money from a standard savings account to a high-yield savings account can also help.

Banks are now offering 4% to 5% interest rates, compared to the standard 1%. For holiday travel, book your flight by early October. According to Google data, flights are cheapest 71 days from your departure date.

These are just a few of the 99 tips included in the comprehensive list, which aims to provide practical advice for everyday savings amid challenging economic conditions.
