IPhones are the most desired phone on the market, and that is because if they were to choose a totally free mobile phone, the vast majority would opt for the latest model released by Apple. This is demonstrated by the facts, because just by looking at the list of the best-selling phones in 2023, we observe that Apple’s devices occupy up to six positions out of the 10 best-selling mobile phones worldwide, even though they are on average the most expensive.
The power of Apple is so great that iOS, its operating system, is one of the largest that exist, as it has billions of registered users. These figures are very striking, and this not only interests Apple investors, but it is also highly interesting information for cybercriminals.
Since infiltrating Apple’s systems could access the personal and banking information of these billions of people. While it is true that iOS is a secure system, just like every iPhone is, no one is exempt from experiencing a cyber attack.
And this is what Apple is alerting users in India and 91 other countries and more (the complete list is not published) about the possible threat of an attack through a “mercenary spyware” that could even give control of the iPhone to the cybercriminal remotely, as reported by the company via email to users in the mentioned country.
“Apple has detected that you are the target of a mercenary spyware attack that is attempting to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-. This attack is likely targeted specifically at you for who you are or what you do. While it is never possible to achieve absolute certainty when detecting such attacks, Apple has great confidence in this warning; take it seriously” can be read in the email sent.
This attack of a mercenary spyware, is a type of attack similar to the famous Pegasus that spied on Government members, but as the company points out, they are extremely rare but very effective. The reason for Apple’s discretion on this matter, like the affected countries, is to keep the exact details to themselves in order not to disclose information that could be useful to attackers.
Apple is recommending to users to be extra careful with the links or files that arrive in the coming days, especially when it comes to unknown numbers or unsolicited communications, such as a message from a delivery company when we are not expecting any package.
