Who doesn’t want a promotion in their job? Not just a better salary, career advancement, and perhaps even a nice office, but the feeling that you’re actually needed and appreciated.

We’ve compiled a list of 8 tips in this article all designed to help you grease that ladder and send you upwards to better positions. Let’s do it…

1. Listen and Learn

“Open your ears, open your mind”, as the saying goes. What it means is instead of getting involved in meaningless chatter in a conversation, be quiet and just listen to what the other person is telling you.

In a work environment, always be mindful of not just conversations you’re involved in but also conversations other people may be having that you just happen to be in earshot of. If you listen attentively and quietly contemplate the talking around you, you’ll be able to engage in a more meaningful way and improve your promotion chances if people continually find you as someone both intelligent and astute.

2. Take An Interest

Another very effective way to get career advancement in a company is to take a genuine interest in the wellbeing of your colleagues. Perhaps a co-worker is having a problem with some task, then help them find a solution. If you are unable to solve it yourself, locate the resources available for your fellow worker to deal with that problem, etc.

Socializing with colleagues is also a surefire way for promotion. If they get to know you as a person, you have better chances endearing yourself to them and making you more likely to be considered when a promotion is available.

3. Self-Improvement

Improving your existing skills or learning to develop new ones are always useful for career advancement. People follow leaders, and people who show leadership qualities will get promoted quicker than more passive individuals.

Some companies offer leadership training, or courses in other such qualities. Sign up to these whenever available and show management you’re ready and willing to learn.

4. Admit Your Mistakes

None of us are perfect, we all make mistakes occasionally. In a work setting, mistakes rarely stay hidden for long. If you do make errors of judgment, own up to them even if there are consequences. People are innately honest at heart and tend to respect those who acknowledge their failings even if it costs them.

And owning up to your mistakes tells management you are someone to be trusted, which could go a long way to you being considered for a promotion.

5. Put In The Effort

Everyone at work is, of course, expected to give maximum effort to doing their respective jobs correctly. But putting in that extra effort, to go above and beyond what is merely expected of you, to give 110% and surpass expectations is a very good way to gain promotion.

Perhaps even not just do the job but analyze it first, discover new and better ways to complete it, bring something new and substantive to the table, and you’ll quickly get a reputation for being someone that management can consider a real asset.

6. Motivation

Not just motivating yourself to do the very best you can and get noticed in the work environment, but motivating others too. Encouraging and advising other co-workers at work lets people see you as someone who genuinely cares not just about them but in getting the work done.

And for the purposes of career advancement, it lets management know that you’re someone who they can rely upon to be a team player, aiding your promotional chances in the process.

7. Take Responsibility

No-one likes or cares much for a slacker in the workplace, someone who really doesn’t care much about being responsible or particularly interested in their fellow colleagues. That type of person rarely advances much in a company or even stays with the company for any length of time.

But for someone seeking promotion, taking the bull by the horns and not just being but being seen to be responsible is an effective way to get on the next rung of the career ladder. Arrive to work in time, always look presentable, be consistently reliable in completing tasks, and being a team leader to those around you will mark you out as someone deserving of promotion.

8. Consult A Mentor

To gain career advancement, being seen as a leader is a surefire way to gain it, but leadership is hard work and even the best leaders aren’t born that way, they learn it from experience. Utilize that valuable experience by asking for advice from those both in and outside your work environment. Most times, they’ll be pleased and even a little flattered that you deem them worthy to ask their opinion.

By having a mentor – someone you can consult with regularly – you gain knowledge and experience above your own and can use that to become a better person and employee, and get noticed by management as someone wise and prudent, willing to listen, eager to learn, and deserving of promotion.

All these points take time, both individually and collectively, so don’t have unrealistic expectations of getting a promotion by next Tuesday! Work steadily, work solidly, prove your worth to the company and inevitably you will be noticed… and once that happens, opportunities will open up for you. Good luck!
