Wealthy entrepreneur Elon Musk seems to be pursuing the establishment of his own version of Mar-a-Lago within the capital of the United States.
According to various unnamed sources who spoke to Eater, the world’s wealthiest individual is intent on securing the successful bid for the Line, a fashionable hotel in D.C. that is currently on the market, intending to convert it into a “private social club.”
This once-popular 220-room hotel, which opened its doors merely seven years ago, has gone on auction after it did not achieve the financial targets anticipated by its owners, as reported by The Real Deal.
What Musk aims to do with the premises, should he successfully bid on it during the public auction set for this Thursday, remains uncertain. However, considering his new role as co-director of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), coupled with his close association with President-elect Donald Trump since his victory, Musk may be positioning himself to establish a personal headquarters.
Trump’s own well-known private club and resort—Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida—has historically functioned as his base of operations. Throughout Trump’s first term, he has hosted a variety of world officials, influential business leaders, and celebrities there, all seemingly eager to align themselves with him.
Musk, the owner of Tesla and X, is set to join an array of prominent tech executives—including Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos—at Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday. He is also expected to address the pre-inaugural event on Sunday, as reported by NBC News.
Due to “extremely cold weather conditions,” this inauguration will be held inside the Capitol Rotunda instead of the usual outdoor setting.
“An Arctic wave is affecting the entire country. My concern is for people’s safety; I don’t want anyone to end up harmed in any way,” Trump stated on Truth Social. “These are perilous conditions for the thousands of law enforcement officials, first responders, police dogs, and even horses, along with the many hundreds of thousands of supporters who will be gathered outside for several hours on the 20th (Nevertheless, if you choose to attend, please dress warmly!).”
