Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of John F. Kennedy, has garnered affection from Democrats with his offbeat contributions on social media. However, this time, he may have crossed a line.
The backlash was swift as both fans and critics unleashed their disapproval after Schlossberg shared an Instagram video that poked fun at his cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s speech impairment.
“Hey everyone, I’m trying to find the perfect gift for Donald Trump for the inauguration,” he said in a quavering tone within the brief clip, tagging Kennedy.
“I discovered a really unique creature and took its life, and I’m giving it to him,” he continued, showcasing an octopus stuffed toy.
The clip ridiculed RFK Jr.’s spasmodic dysphonia, a condition characterized by involuntary spasms of the vocal cords.
The feedback on Schlossberg’s post was predominantly critical, with users condemning him for trivializing a medical condition.
“Can you believe that you’re so bitter about RFK Jr. that you emerge from your insignificant shadow in the family to humiliate yourself online?” read one of the top comments. “Seven million of us stand by him—meanwhile, you’re out here demonstrating why nobody takes you seriously. Go shed some tears elsewhere, creep.”
“Absolutely appalling conduct. If this is your behavior towards family, just imagine how you treat outsiders,” another commenter chimed in.
RFK Jr., a vocal opponent of vaccines, has been candid about his experience with the disorder. In a discussion with The Los Angeles Times, he expressed sympathy for those who have to hear his speech.
“My voice doesn’t really tire out. It merely sounds awful,” he remarked. “However, the injury is neurological, so in fact, the more I use my voice, the more robust it tends to become.”
The elder Kennedy, who has been chosen by Trump to assume the role of Secretary of Health and Human Services, mentioned that he considers the flu vaccine to be “at least a possible suspect,” even though he admitted there is no proof linking the two.
Schlossberg has ridiculed his cousin on Instagram multiple times before. In a series of videos last year, he referred to RFK Jr. as a “prick” and “a disgrace.”
