When queried on Thursday about the conversation he had with Barack Obama at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral held in Washington, D.C., Donald Trump refrained from providing specifics—but noted that he was unaware of how cordial their interaction seemed to those observing.
Addressing the media at Mar-a-Lago alongside Republican governors, Trump informed Fox News’ Peter Doocy that the two “probably” share a good rapport.
“It certainly appeared very amicable, I have to admit. I wasn’t aware of how amiable it appeared. I just saw it on your fantastic network a short while ago before I arrived,” Trump remarked. “And I thought, ‘Wow, they appear to be two people who appreciate one another.’”
At one moment, Obama was observed laughing at something Trump mentioned, with Trump beaming in response.
“We likely do [appreciate each other],” Trump added. “We may have slightly differing ideologies, right? Yet, we probably do—I’m not sure. We just hit it off. However, I tend to get along with nearly everyone.”
Trump and Obama were positioned next to one another due to Michelle Obama’s absence, as she was reportedly dealing with a scheduling issue in Hawaii.
“As you know, we met behind the scenes before we stepped out,” Trump went on. “I thought it was a lovely service. But everyone got along famously, which is positive.”
Nevertheless, during the service, at least one prominent attendee appeared to snub Trump: Karen Pence. The spouse of his former vice president did not acknowledge him as he took his seat in front of her and her husband.
