The camp surrounding Kamala Harris appears divided regarding her future political trajectory. Associates of the vice president are actively assessing the possibility of a gubernatorial bid in California for 2026, alongside a potential third attempt at the presidency.
According to sources who spoke to CNN, the key factor in her decision-making will be the likelihood of securing the Democratic nomination for president in 2028. Current and former advisers to Harris, along with prominent California Democratic figures, reached a consensus that she is unlikely to pursue both positions simultaneously.
“If you’re contemplating a presidential run in 2028, attempting to run for governor in 2026 is the least strategic move,” remarked a former advisor to Harris.
In light of her 100-day campaign for the 2024 presidency, during which she amassed over $1 billion, the California native suffered a significant defeat against Donald Trump in both the popular and electoral votes. Supporters advocating for her candidacy for governor interpret this setback as an omen concerning a potential 2028 presidential run.
When compared to the presidential race, Harris’s chances for winning the governorship seem notably better, considering her election victories in California statewide three times, coupled with a decade of experience as both state attorney general and US senator.
CNN has reported that several prominent candidates vying to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom have suggested they would likely withdraw if Harris chose to enter the race for the governorship.
If she opts to pursue the governorship, senior advisors to Harris believe that she would need to clarify her intentions by the summer of 2025 at the absolute latest.
However, some of her close associates perceive the governor’s position as a less favorable choice.
“Launching a campaign for governor could be viewed as a downgrade, and it might hamper her prospects for a presidential bid in the future,” said a source familiar with Harris’s circle to CNN. “While I can’t predict if she will aim for the presidency again, the opportunity to pursue that path may outweigh the prospect of seeking the governorship.”
Reports indicate that Harris herself remains uncertain about her political direction. Though she has kept a relatively low profile following her defeat to Trump, she has assured supporters and donors, “I’m not going quietly into the night,” when prompted about her future plans.
