Growth mindset is a term that is often discussed, but how can you actually promote and establish a culture that recognizes and rewards those who thrive on challenges and continually seek opportunities to push themselves? Max Heineman, the co-founder and CEO of toldright, recently spoke about his journey as an entrepreneur and how he has cultivated that culture within his organization.
Growth Mindset Applies to All Areas of Life
Throughout his experience of working three jobs during summers as he grew up, Max has always displayed an entrepreneurial spirit and a strong work ethic. However, it was his wife and three children that made him realize that embracing a growth mindset begins with personal application—being an entrepreneur has a significant impact on your family life. The more alignment you have with them and understand where your next steps will take you, the better.
Seniority Doesn’t Dictate Organization or Ideation
In March 2020, Max launched toldright, a video production company that brings together creators from the gig economy to help convey a brand’s narrative. Although toldright welcomed many senior executives from large media companies who were accustomed to a hierarchical leadership approach, Max believed that this style was not conducive to success at an entrepreneurial level. Instead, he implemented a horizontal management style within his company. Whether you are at an entry level position or in top management, speaking up is encouraged.
Growth involves both learning and unlearning. While practice is important, it can also become ingrained. Unlearning old thought patterns and considering your employees as equals can open up new perspectives and lead to innovative ideas. In this structure, there are opportunities for reverse mentoring, and employees at toldright have the flexibility to take time off as needed. Not everyone may thrive in this environment, so it is essential to recruit individuals who are eager to grow and expand in this setting.
How to Look at Star Ratings and Experience
Max’s network of video producers consists of individuals who have excelled in their fields and are seeking new opportunities. However, not only high-tier talents are part of toldright. For example, someone who is a four-star talent with less experience but aspires to reach a five-star level demonstrates a growth mindset and is considered a strong candidate.
Individuals who are open to learning new skills, recent graduates, or those who are adaptable to market changes can bring valuable perspectives and ideas. Ultimately, the right mindset, a growth-oriented one, is crucial for success at toldright.
Preparation Builds Confidence
Prior to launching the company, Max conducted a risk audit to anticipate challenges that could arise and impact his family and business. By evaluating your business objectively and understanding potential risks, you can develop strategies to mitigate them. Your employees can also provide insights into potential issues that may arise.
Being prepared for obstacles along the journey to success is essential, as unforeseen challenges can impact your progress. The path to success is dynamic, requiring readiness for any setbacks that may occur.
Don’t Get Too Far Down the Rabbit Hole
When assessing risks, it is important to distinguish between negative and constructive thoughts. Practicing meditation, reflecting on past achievements, and expressing gratitude can help maintain a balanced perspective. Similar to having a hurricane preparedness kit, scenario planning and honest evaluations of your business can provide reassurance when faced with potential challenges.
